Internet Computer-Dating Service - Most Frequently Asked Questions

Mayer Computer Services

GENERAL NOTICE - PLEASE READ THIS FIRST

We are doing everything in order to reach the largest possible number of people, since the larger the pool of clients, the higher your chances of meeting exactly the kind of people that you want. Therefore, it will be hard to answer personally all questions by E-mail. For this reason we have designed this FAQ, which is supposed to answer all possible questions and problems. Please read the FAQ carefully, and if you have a question that is not answered in the FAQ or in the detailed explanations of our HOME PAGE, then Please E-mail it to us (our E-mail address is: yaron@computer-dating.com). We cannot promise to reply personally, but we will keep updating this FAQ all the time, So keep checking it every week.

Q1: Why do you have such a long questionnaire?
A1: Our questionnaire is based on research conducted at the Hebrew University and 5 years of experience with our local computer-dating pool of more than 19,400 clients in ISRAEL, most of them students and graduates at the ages 20-40. The questionnaire is based on 2 main principles:
  1. There must be a clear separation between SELF & WANTED MATE, since the WANTED is not always the same as the SELF, and since the WANTED is usually a RANGE of possible preferences whereas the SELF description is ALWAYS one option only.

  2. Since everyone has different preferences, the questionnaire has to be very comprehensive, and with an IMPORTANCE for each question. This way everyone can very quickly build the profile of what's important to him/her and mark IMPORTANCE 0 in all the other questions.
Although shorter questionnaires take less time to fill, we hope that you agree with us that that spending 1 hour of your life on filling the questionnaire is quite worth the investment, since you can enjoy the rewards for months or years. A good questionnaire gives you a much better chance of meeting the right person that you really want.

Q2: What is your price policy?
A2: FOR THE NEXT FEW MONTHS, OUR SERVICE IS TOTALLY FREE - no charge at all. We will E-mail you lists of most compatible mates and you can choose which dates you wish to contact through E-mail (or phone, if available). If you are satisfied by the level of people you receive and by the level of the compatibility, RECOMMEND IT TO YOUR FRIENDS. Each user can bring 2-3 more friends, and this way you can all enjoy a very fast growth of the pool of potential dates. In fact you can FREELY give them copies of our QUMOUSE program (just don't give them the files QUMOUSE.RES and QUMOUSE.COD, since they contain your own data).

After the service becomes fully interactive, hopefully in half a year, we will start charging for the service, but our prices will be very low, in order to keep up the high growth rate of the pool of potential dates.

Q3: Why are there two columns for the IDEAL mate in the questionnaire?
A3: You use two columns instead of one if you want to emphasize some possibilities more than others IN THE SAME QUESTION. For example, if you want a mate with Post-secondary education or higher but prefer B.A. or M.A., then you fill 1 column for Post-secondary, 2 for B.A and 2 for M.A. If you don't mind which of these 3 possibilities it will be, then you can either mark 1 column in each of the 3 or 2 columns in each of the 3 - the results will be the same. The use of 2 columns in any question will mean higher preference only if there are other option(s) in that question which you marked with only 1 column. Another example - if you want Blondes or Red hair but prefer Blondes, then mark 2 columns for Blondes and 1 for Red hair. If you don't mind if it's Blonde or Red hair, mark the same number of columns for both of them.

Q4: Can I be matched also with people from your Israeli Database?
A4: At the moment there are technical and procedural difficulties in connecting between our Israeli Database and the Internet DataBase. One of the main problems is that many of our Israeli clients are not yet connected to the Internet. Also, there are some differences in the questionnaire. But eventually we will of course try to connect as large a part of it as possible.

Q5: I wanted people who don't go to discotheques and marked the highest importance level in this question, but my list mentions the word Discotheques near almost every mate that I got. Or I marked that don't want people who listen to a certain kind of music, but this kind of music is listed for every date that I got.
A5: The list of your most important requirements that were fulfilled by each mate mentions THE NAMES OF THE QUESTIONS AND NOT THEIR CONTENT. Therefore, if you wanted someone that doesn't go to discotheques, then the appearance of the word Discotheques simply means that he/she fulfills what you requested in this question - so in this case it means that he/she DOESN'T go to it. And if you wanted people who DON'T listen to this music, then it means they DON'T.
Q6: I wanted only dates taller than 175 cm but got on the list also dates with smaller height (or any other question) .
A6: This means that you didn't give this question Absolute importance. Use the interactive filling program to correct this question and E-mail us again your questionnaire. However, you must understand that Absolute weight is available only for the questions in Background and for Height. Otherwise you can only use weight 4 instead, which can significantly change the score but does not guarantee any given condition.

Q7: I have been in your DATABASE for a few months now and no one has ever contacted me yet. Or my lists are usually small, with low scores.
A7: We cannot guarantee any number of referrals to you. This depends largely on the number of clients at any given time and area and on they way you fill your questionnaire. For example, the more narrowly you define your preferences, the less people will receive you in their list. So you have to contact them yourself. Also, you may try to broaden your answers by allowing more options in the wanted or by zeroing the importance of more questions, leaving only the REALLY important ones.

Q8: Only some of the people which I contacted received me also on THEIR list. Isn't the compatibility supposed to work both ways?
A8: The compatibility DOES work both ways. So if you fulfill 85% of your date's expectations and he/she fulfills 89% of yours, both these scores will be taken into account, and they will be the same on your list and on the other person's list. However, the RELATIVE POSITIONS on your lists can be quite different, so if someone appears in the 3rd place on your list for example, you may appear on his/her list in the 67th place, etc. And if someone appears in your secondary list (the list of persons that fell just because of only 1 question but would have a high score otherwise), you will not appear in his/her list at all. This is why IT IS ALWAYS MORE EFFICIENT TO CONTACT ACTIVELY THE MOST COMPATIBLE DATES ON YOUR LIST THAN TO WAIT FOR THEM TO CONTACT YOU.

Q9: Some of the dates that I got told me that it's not relevant anymore, or the person is not available anymore in the E-mail address that you gave me.
A9: Report to us all such cases, but only if that person has moved or told you it is not relevant anymore. You need to use the automatic Irrelevant form for this and fill in the correct space exactly what the person told you. DO NOT USE THE FORM IF HE/SHE WAS SIMPLY NOT INTERESTED IN THIS PARTICULAR CASE. We will contact the person, and check if he/she is indeed not relevant or moved. If your browser does not support forms, send us E-mail with your request and include a single word IRRELEVANT in the subject.

Q10: I found someone and would like to quit your database.
A10: You can easily Freeze yourself by using the Freeze From. Mark also the reasons why you want to frieze yourself - this is very important for statistical reasons. While frozen, nobody will receive you anymore in their lists, and you will not be able to extract any more lists. If your browser does not support forms, send us E-mail with your request and include a single word FREEZE in the subject. You can thaw yourself at any time by simply E-mailing us again your QUMOUSE.COD file.

Q11: I would like to change some of my answers.
A11: Simply use again the interactive filling program, with your QUMOUSE.RES file in the same directory, and E-mail us again the new QUMOUSE.COD file that is created after you SAVE your new answers. Your new form must be E-mailed from the same E-mail address that your are using in all your communications with us.

Q12: My E-mail address has changed.
A12: Use the E-mail change form.

Q13: I lost or erased my QUMOUSE.RES or QUMOUSE.COD file but I would like to make a few changes to my answers or thaw myself from freezing.
A13: If you lost the QUMOUSE.COD file but have your QUMOUSE.RES file, there is no problem. Simply re-enter the filling program and choose "Save". This will automatically re-create the QUMOUSE.COD file. If you lost your QUMOUSE.RES file then you will have to refill the whole questionnaire again before you can E-mail us your new answers.

Q14: How safe is the data on the net?
A14: We are doing everything we can to ensure data security. This is why you send us your questionnaire in coded form. We also use a double-gateway, so our home page is only the front-end. But keep in mind that anyway the questionnaire itself has no prying or embarrassing questions.

Q15: I have accidentally changed my QUMOUSE.RES file with a text editor and now QUMOUSE won't run
A15: If it's just a small change try to change it back. Most editors also create automatically a backup file with the extension ".bak". After fixing, check that when running the program your answers are still the same. If nothing works, you might have to delete the file QUMOUSE.RES and refill the questionnaire.

Q16: Why are there no questions about sex?
A16: We believe that issues such as frequency of sex are mainly a function of the level of physical attraction between two specific people and the quality of the relationship. So we see no point as in using this as selection criteria. Also, as explained above, we do not wish to include questions that might embarrass people.

Q17: Why is there no Absolute weight in Attitudes, Interests, and Personality?
A17: It is our experience that Absolute can be easily misused in these areas. In real life interests & attitudes are changeable and negotiable and cannot be considered absolute criteria for choice. As for personality, the questions are usually too vague and problematic to enable the use of Absolute weight.
